1) All Aboard!
Throughout the world there are thousands of train enthusiasts – people who are fascinated by the power of trains. They are interested in the past development of rail transport and its effect on travel and trade. Following the history of trains makes people wonder what changes the future will bring.
Planet Earth is sometimes called 'the blue planet'. Do you know why? It's because the oceans of salty water cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface, making it look blue from Space. The oceans are so deep and huge that there are still many dark, distant places that are unexplored. Every year hundreds of amazing new sea creatures are being discovered by marine scientists.
3) Eruptions!
Do you know that the deep core of the Earth contains boiling melted rock called magma? Find out how it sometimes explodes through the Earth's crust as lava, forming a volcano. There are several kinds of volcanoes to learn about. Can you think of anything good about a volcano?
How often do people say, 'It depends on the weather?' Alternative arrangements must be made if conditions are unsuitable for planned activities. Cancellation, postponement or change of venue all result from bad weather affecting work, sport, farming, transport, communications, travel, etc. Temperature, sunshine, rainfall and wind all impact on our daily lives.
Coal is burned to make electricity. Iron is used to make steel. Electrical wiring is made from copper. Stone and sand are needed for building. These important materials and others like them make our lives easier, but they are not easy to get because they have to be dug out of the ground. The first miners used picks and shovels. Mining has changed a lot since then.
6) Migration
Have you ever moved from your home to a new home? Animals and people move around all the time. Sometimes they move short distances and at other times they move far away. This long distance movement is often described as migration. Why do animals and people migrate? Where do they go and why? How do they get there? What can migration tell us about our history and the world around us?
